Let’s just say it how it really is; Valentine’s Day can be rough for about half the population of the world. It’s the day of romantic love and a chance for people to show their love to their significant others. So what about those who don’t have someone who can be their Valentine? In some cases, they throw a pity party for themselves and fill the holiday with negativity towards themselves and their current romantic situation. These people can come from any sort of background. Young people who are currently single and don’t have someone to call their own, Older people who lost their significant other and feel their loss really strongly around Valentine’s Day. The romantic significance we put on the holiday causes a lot of people to think that they are alone in the world and that they are a failure when it comes to their romantic life. So how do we avoid feeling the sadness that Valentine’s Day can sometimes bring?
Romance Yourself
This always sounds a little weird but it is a fantastic way to make yourself feel good on Valentine’s Day. Take the day for yourself and do the things that you would want someone to do for you. If you wanted to go on a date to the movies and dinner, take yourself. This could be a little awkward but romancing yourself can build your love for yourself greatly. Take yourself on a small trip to somewhere you wanted to go. Spend the night watching your favorite show on Netflix. Do whatever you want to do and let yourself feel good about doing it. Also, try on focus how you doing something alone is better than having someone there. If you go out to dinner relish the fact that you don’t have to share your dessert. Point is “Treat yourself!”
Romance with your Friends
Being aware of others on Valentine’s Day is a fantastic way to crash your own pity party. A great thing to do is revert back to how you treated Valentine’s Day in grade school. Make small cards and deliver them to others to brighten their day. Remember there are others that are in the same situation as you. Find those people and work to make them have a good day. There are tons of ways to do this: take advantage of couples deals with one of your friends, Do a secret Santa like gift exchange with your friends. Using Valentine’s day to show your love for your friends will make you see the love that others have for you and help make them feel loved too. After all, Valentine’s Day is for love, not lovers.
Serve Someone
Doing things for others and focusing on how you can help other people with their problems is a fantastic way to take the light off your own issues. My favorite suggestion I have heard is to volunteer to babysit for a couple that is looking to have a night out on Valentine’s. Knowing that you are making a difference to improve someone else’s night is a fantastic way to draw attention away from yourself. There are numerous ways to help make someone else’s Valentines Day better so rather than focusing on yourself focus outward and have yourself a great day.
Valentine’s day can have a very negative effect on some people even though it is a holiday that celebrates love we can’t help but feel down if we don’t have some sort of romantic love. To improve the holiday when you don’t have a significant other find your own way to focus on something other than your love life. Focus on loving others and focus on loving yourself and you can have the best Valentine’s Day and start to feel sorry for those who didn’t experience your day.
